What is the New Golden Mile?

The New Golden Mile (or Nueva Milla de Oro in Spanish) is a coastal stretch and inland zones that lie west of San Pedro de Alcantara, Marbella, and east from Estepona.  Don’t let the word “Mile” fool you. The name is misleading, as it’s actually 12 miles, or a 19-km stretch of coastline, known for its sandy beaches, clear waters, opulent properties, and all amenities for luxurious lifestyle. The views to the mountains, Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar and North Africa are spectacular. And this combination of nature, luxury, and investment potential is irresistible. Therefore, there’s truth in the word “Golden”. The New Golden Mile really is a golden place to live and to invest!

The New Golden Mile has earned a reputation as one of the most coveted residential areas on the Costa del Sol. A byword for sophisticated living, the area is dotted with superb restaurants and bars, beach clubs, golf courses, tennis clubs, shops and supermarkets, international schools, 5-star hotels, health resorts, and spas. It is home to beautiful parks and green spaces, a well-known Equestrian centre, and the wildlife Selwo safari park spanning over 100 hectares.

The New Golden Mile offers a mix of high-end beachside complexes and established holiday resorts as well as gated communities of modern villas, apartments, and townhouses, by the sea or golf courses. Property investors and homebuyers can find their perfect real estate on the New Golden Mile.

Thanks to strict construction regulations and careful urban planning, this area boasts a lower-density living environment, the natural beauty, an abundance of uninterrupted sea and mountains views, and no high-rise buildings.

Why is it Called the New Golden Mile?

The New Golden Mile has taken its name from Marbella’s legendary Golden Mile. Although not an official name, it has gained popularity among real estate experts and residents to emphasise the area’s growth and prestige. The original Golden Mile has received its name from the extensive amount of luxury amenities along its super exclusive stretch.
Read about it here Golden Mile area guide.

Some people call the New Golden Mile a big-time fresh challenger to Marbella’s Golden Mile. Others say that there’s simply no comparison between the two of them… though it’s quite tempting, as both offer luxurious lifestyle, high-end real estate, outstanding features, sun-drenched allure, mountain scenery, spectacular sea views, etc.

What can we say? Although named after its world-famous neighbour, the upscale New Golden Mile has developed a distinct character and its own identity. Let’s have a closer look.

Where is the New Golden Mile Located?

Located halfway between cosmopolitan Marbella and a quiet Andalusian town of Estepona, the New Golden Mile is a perfect blend of both worlds. It stretches from Guadalmina, San Pedro de Alcantara (Marbella’s municipality) to the beginning of Estepona town. The name refers to the beachside area south of the N-340/A7 coastal road (which belongs to Estepona’s municipality), and the inland areas immediately above the road on a mountainside position (municipalities of Estepona and Benahavis). Sheltered by the peaceful bay to the south, and the Sierra Bermeja mountain range to the north, the New Golden Mile enjoys a privileged position and perfect microclimate. It makes the area an ideal location to live or visit all year round.

The main coastal road divides the New Golden Mile into two distinct parts. The Northern side encompasses some popular urbanizations with lower prices, and many shops, supermarkets, and restaurants. The Southern part, beachside, offers access to luxury real estate, with square metre prices being up to triple those on the Northern side.

The New Golden Mile is well served by the local road network and public transport, and has easy access to the toll road AP-7. Offering an extensive range of international connections to the USA, UK, Europe, and destinations within Spain, the high-speed trains and both international airports, Malaga-Costa del Sol and Gibraltar, are within an hour drive.

All key areas of Marbella and Estepona are within reach. From the middle of the New Golden Mile (without heavy traffic):

  • Marbella’s Golden Mile: a 20-minute drive.
  • San Pedro de Alcantara: a 13-minute drive.
  • Marbella Old Town: a 25-minute drive.
  • Puerto Banus: a 15-minute drive.
  • The main Costa del Sol Hospital: a 30-minute drive.
  • Estepona Centre: a 10-minute drive.

What is the History of the Golden Mile?

The New Golden Mile came into being at the end of the 1990’s. During the past 20 years, it has been in development quite extensively, without losing its natural surroundings, thanks to Estepona’s respectful planning and building policies. Over the past few years, the New Golden Mile has witnessed a surge in development and popularity. It’s easy to see why. One of the most ambitious Spanish towns in recent times, Estepona is making a name for itself. The new local projects have created a high quality of life, focusing on very different things: sustainability, renewed water supply, beaches maintenance, re-equipping the police, opening new public facilities and amenities, etc. Estepona’s New Golden Mile is paving the way for a new hub of luxury in Southern Spain.

15 Factors that Make the New Golden Mile So Attractive

The New Golden Mile attracts a surge of interest from homebuyers and property investors. What makes it “golden”?

  1. Perfect environmental conditions and microclimate provided by the Sierra Bermeja mountain range and a privileged position in a sheltered bay.
  2. Prime location: quiet but also near the coastal buzz. Its proximity to Estepona, Marbella, and Puerto Banus provides residents with the perfect balance between tranquil luxury and easy access to vibrant nightlife, shopping, dining, and entertainment.
  3. Excellent infrastructure, good roads, and easy access to all amenities, the coastline’s most visited resorts, and international airports.
  4. Year-round sunshine: with over 320 days of sunshine per year, Costa del Sol’s climate is considered the best in continental Europe.
  5. Sandy beaches of varied characteristics and extensions. They are surprisingly quiet, even during the busiest season, but have plenty of beach bars, chiringuitos, cafés, and beach clubs. The front beach urbanizations have direct access to beaches and the Promenade, ideal for relaxing, walking, jogging, cycling, and yoga.
  6. Golf courses, designed by some of the most acclaimed golf architects in the industry. The Costa del Sol, nicknamed “Costa del Golf” boasts the biggest concentration of golf courses in the world. At the heart of the action, Estepona offers not only the high standard in its golf clubs facilities, but an opportunity to enjoy the star sport all year round.
  7. Top-notch amenities that cater to discerning tastes: stylish restaurants, deluxe hotels, sophisticated shopping opportunities, beach clubs, international schools, and a vibrant nightlife.
  8. Natural beauty: the area captivates with its awe-inspiring beauty, scenic landscapes, golden sands and clear waters, combining nature’s splendour with resort convenience.
  9. Fantastic views: the homes often boast breath-taking panoramic or uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar and African coast, offering sunsets and stunning vistas. The Sierra Bermeja Mountains are an unmatched backdrop. Views across lush green fairways of the golf courses are equally spectacular.
  10. Wellness and relaxation options: the New Golden Mile makes it easy to rest, relax and unwind. Its numerous wellness centres, health resorts, and incredible spas invite to indulge in pampering treatments, holistic and innovative therapies. Practicing yoga by the serene sea brings benefits that go beyond the mat.
  11. Thoughtful approach to property development and urban planning: rather than cluttering the seafront with unsightly apartment blocks, like in many other resorts, the government of Estepona has opted for the emphasis on individual properties and detached houses, preserving the natural beauty and views.
  12. Housing options: the New Golden Mile’s properties suit even the most discerning tastes. Its high-end villas, charming townhouses, and stylish apartment buildings provide luxury, privacy, and comfort of living.
  13. High quality of properties with the seamless integration of top-notch construction techniques, premium materials, and lavish finishes.
  14. International community: living on the New Golden Mile means becoming part of an active international community.
  15. Exceptional investment potential: The New Golden Mile’s prestige and popularity mean that property values remain robust, making the area an attractive option for a sound investment with high returns and long-term growth. Properties within the Golden Triangle (Marbella, Estepona and Benahavis) see premium rental rates, and strong occupancy levels (at least 70%) throughout the year.

Is the New Golden Mile Environmentally Friendly?

Estepona proudly stands as the very first municipality in Malaga’s province to establish a Low Emission Zone (LEZ). Several projects and pioneering initiatives has placed it at the forefront of sustainable, eco-friendly destinations.  Estepona’s New Golden Mile is a perfect example of the harmonious coexistence of a high-quality life and environmental responsibility.  Eco-luxury is a new emerging trend in the area that captures the imagination of architects, designers, and discerning buyers. The new generation of luxury homeowners seeks a high-end home that incorporates sustainable practices for the future of the planet.

The New Golden Mile is the perfect backdrop for green revolution in luxury living. It embraces sustainable practices and green initiatives, preserves its natural surroundings, protects beaches and green spaces, and creates new gardens. It encourages eco-friendly transportation options, from electric cars to bicycles and efficient public transport. Its properties use solar panels, LED lighting, smart home systems, and energy-saving technologies. Water-saving practices in the urbanizations include efficient irrigation systems and landscaping with drought-resistant plants.

Natural charm combined with eco-friendly features, modern amenities and infrastructure, makes the New Golden Mile an ideal location for those looking to invest in sustainable luxury. Cataleya Apartments is an example of the new developments that exemplifies the eco-luxury trend. Offering sustainable living, this modern residential complex is built with a focus on energy efficiency and use of natural and eco-friendly materials. Surrounded by nature, beautiful golf greens, and stunning sustainable gardens, the low-density buildings boast an eye-catching contemporary design, floor-to-ceiling windows, LED lighting, and bright, airy interiors with a nod to Scandi minimalism. Thanks to the concept of salt chlorination, the water in the swimming pool feels smooth and fresh.

The area is home to a range of highly desirable properties, from opulent houses of beachside Casasola, modern frontline golf villas of Los Flamingos, holiday apartments in El Presidente and lovely townhouses in Alcazaba Beach, to older homes awaiting a top-to-toe renovation in Bel Air or Atalaya Isdabe. Is Real Estate on the New Golden Mile Expensive?

As desirable as always and even more, Estepona area attracts investors, homebuyers, and renters. The New Golden Mile is the hottest location to invest in the municipality and on the Costa del Sol, a “goldmine” for property buyers. Its real estate varies in cost depending on the style, size, and location chosen. Ease of buying or building there is mainly due to the ease of obtaining a construction licence, which differs to that of Marbella’s municipality. There is also significantly more land for construction. Generally, Estepona is more affordable than Marbella, but property here is no longer the bargain that it once was, thanks to a great deal of quality investment.

Nevertheless, prices on Estepona’s New Golden Mile fall below than on Marbella’s Golden Mile. There are beautiful homes that can be bought for €250-350 thousand. However, luxurious properties like newly built penthouses with sea views, or beachfront villas with state-of-the-art features can be valued at €4-8 million, and more…and they’re worth every penny!

Beaches are spacious, no need to fight for a beachside daybed; and there’s always room at a local chiringuito for a cold sangria.

Some of the New Golden Mile’s beaches are:

Casasola Beach/Atalaya is the most eastern beach of Estepona municipality, located in the charming residential area with high quality properties. The extensive sands, clear waters, and beautiful countryside make it an excellent bathing area. La Atalaya offer great opportunities for practising a wide variety of water sports. Would you like to live nearby? Here is your perfect, brand-new penthouse with panoramic sea views in Atalaya.

Saladillo Beach is one of the largest beaches in Estepona area. Dunes and pine trees of high ecological value separate it from the adjoining housing estates with apartment complexes, villas and townhouses. Perfect for a family day out, playing games, and building sandcastles, it has all the facilities, nautical activities, and beach bars. Pepe’s Chiringuito is a local favourite; for something a little more indulgent, try La Antigua.

Guadalmansa Beach/ Playa Bella is located next to the Park Beach (a complex with apartments and duplexes, beautiful gardens, lagoon-style pools, and 24-h security) and Menara Beach (a prestigious urbanization with 105 high-end apartments and luxurious amenities). The well-known Tikitano Restaurant is also a reference point.
This long and quiet (even in summer) beach with a mixture of sand and stone is ideal for long walks or relaxing with a book or cocktail. Barraka Beach Club, with refreshments and sun loungers, awaits in the beautiful urbanisation of Villacana.

Playa de Guadalmina invites to embrace local culture on the beach, which is famous for its Roman ruins Las Bóvedas, an archaeological site from the 3rd century AD, and a defensive watchtower from the 16th century. A popular site, this isn’t probably the quietest beach, but there you’ll find plenty of facilities, a few chiringuitos, and a very old-school corner of tradition and flavour, Playa Bella Restaurant.

Playa del Castor / Arroyo de las Cañas / Velerín is one of the quietest to the east of Estepona.  The secluded, urbanbeach has exceptional scenery made up of sea, mountains, rivers, and lush vegetation. It’s ideal if you want to escape the crowds and relax in the sunshine. A good place to grab a bite or a drink is Dominion Beach. Towards the west end, a nice chiringuito Torre Velerín has tables on the sand and a few sunbeds. There’s also a watchtower from the 16th century.Emare, a new luxury seafront development, has direct access to this beach.

Playa del Padrón is a beach with dark, soft sand, and Laguna centre and Kempinski Resort as its reference point.  It is incredibly popular, and used to be Blue Flag-rated. There are a few beachside developments and several elegant hotels nearby, including the 5-star Kempinski, which bring plenty of visitors. They say one can fish for octopuses that are abundant in the area … or just order it in a fancy restaurant in Laguna.

Punta Plata Beach, a narrow beach with dark sand, is located at the entrance of Estepona in a residential area with luxury resorts Alcazaba Beach, Los Granados del Mar, and Bahia de la Plata. It is relatively quiet, and cyclists and runners can enjoy the new boardwalk. Plata Beach Restaurant is a lovely place for lunch or dinner. Wild Cafe is a very popular brunch spot, with lots of healthy and vegan options, too.

Playa de Costa Natura
Worth mentioning one of the first naturist beaches on the Costa del Sol, and the only one in Estepona area (west), Playa de Costa Natura. There is a low to moderate number of visitors, but they come from all over Europe. A small, private nudist beach has a relaxed and safe atmosphere. You can wear clothes if you like but be aware that many people don’t. It’s certainly an experience…

Is the New Golden Mile Family-Oriented?

Three key components define a family-friendly neighbourhood: safety, convenience, and community. The New Golden Mile ticks all the boxes.

- The area is very safe, with a low crime rate. There is a local police station in Cancelada, right in the centre of the area, ensuring quick and efficient assistance in case of emergencies. The police stations in Estepona and San Pedro de Alcantara are also very close. Most developments are gated, and have their own security. Additionally, both local and national police regularly patrol the New Golden Mile.

-The New Golden Mile is peaceful and quiet, and your home will feel like a refuge. Your family members can rest and sleep well, with no distractions. You won’t find people walking around at night looking sketchy, drunk, or nervous. There is no high concentration of adult-only businesses and late night bars.

- Loads of family necessities including supermarkets, grocery stores, schools, family-friendly restaurants and chiringuitos, are at your fingertips.

- The Costa del Sol caters to families, from water parks and safe beaches where little ones can splash around, to outdoor activities like hiking and biking, and theme and adventure parks. It’s hard to beat local recreational amenities for children, well-kept playgrounds, green parks, tennis and padel courts.

-Many urbanizations and neighbourhoods of the New Golden Mile have wheelchair-accessible sidewalks, paths, and well-lit streetlights for the time when the sun goes down. Community amenities like swimming pools, kids’ pools, and sports facilities greatly support family life. Family friendly-beaches and community pools often have lifeguards, especially in summer season.
